Another 9 Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water: There Is More to It Than pH
For years, alkaline water was mostly sold with one number.
pH.
The higher the number, the better it must be. Or so the thinking went.
But research around alkaline and mineral water has become more interesting than that.
Sometimes the alkalinity matters. Sometimes the minerals matter. Sometimes simply choosing water instead of another drink matters.
So here are another nine benefits worth looking at.
1. Better Hydration
Let us start with the obvious one.
Your body needs water.
But some research suggests certain alkaline waters may influence hydration markers differently from ordinary table water.
In one study involving soccer players, alkaline low-mineral water produced favourable changes in hydration measures after strenuous exercise. [1]
Better water is still useless if we do not drink enough of it.
2. It May Help the Body Handle Intense Exercise Better
Exercise changes the body’s acid-base balance as part of normal metabolism.
A small double-blind study involving trained combat athletes found that highly alkaline mineral water improved acid-base balance and was associated with better anaerobic exercise performance after three weeks. [2]
Does that turn alkaline water into a sports supplement? No.
But it does make the conversation more interesting than simply asking for a pH number.
3. Recovery May Be Interesting Too
Another study involving soccer players found more efficient post-exercise lactate utilisation after drinking alkaline low-mineral water. [1]
Lactate itself is not simply a bad substance that needs to be flushed away, but how the body handles it after intense activity is part of recovery metabolism.
So for active people, perhaps the question is not only “What should I drink during exercise?” It may also be “What am I drinking every day before I even start?”
4. Alkaline Water Has an Interesting Connection With Reflux
This is probably one of the less expected findings.
Pepsin is an enzyme involved in digestion, but when reflux carries it upwards, it can contribute to irritation.
Laboratory research found that water at pH 8.8 irreversibly inactivated pepsin and had stronger acid-buffering capacity than conventional-pH water. [3]
That does not mean a glass of alkaline water is a treatment for every reflux problem.
But researchers actually looked at what happens to pepsin, not merely whether alkaline water “neutralises acid”.
5. Certain Alkaline Mineral Waters Have Been Studied for Digestion
Another interesting area is digestive comfort.
A clinical study involving bicarbonate-rich alkaline mineral water looked at people experiencing functional dyspepsia, including symptoms such as fullness and digestive discomfort.
After 30 days of drinking the mineral water, researchers reported improvements in several digestive symptoms. [4]
The important word here is mineral. What is actually inside the water matters.
6. The Water You Drink Can Contribute Calcium Too
Most people think of calcium as coming from milk, food or supplements. Water rarely enters the conversation.
Yet human research has shown that calcium in calcium-rich mineral water can be absorbed effectively by the body, with bioavailability comparable to familiar dietary calcium sources. [5]
This does not mean drinking water should supply all the calcium we need. That is not the point.
If we are drinking water every day anyway, it can contribute too.
With Biolytes, ionic calcium is an additional everyday contribution alongside the calcium we obtain from the rest of our diet.
7. Calcium Is Still Important for Maintaining Our Bones
This is the benefit most people already know.
Calcium is an important part of maintaining normal bones.
Human research has also examined calcium-rich alkaline mineral waters and bone metabolism. One randomised study found that a bicarbonate-rich alkaline mineral water reduced certain markers of bone resorption. [6]
Biolytes is not intended to replace food or a high-calcium nutritional product.
Everyday drinking water can simply make an extra contribution to something the body already needs.
Sometimes maintenance is exactly that: small things repeated consistently.
8. Calcium Research Does Not Stop at Bones
This one surprised us too.
A major study published in Nature Communications in 2025 followed more than 542,000 women, with over 12,000 colorectal cancer cases during follow-up.
Among 97 dietary factors examined, calcium showed one of the strongest associations. Every additional 300 mg of calcium per day was associated with approximately 17% lower colorectal cancer risk. [7]
Older epidemiological research has even examined calcium specifically in drinking water and found lower colon-cancer mortality in areas with higher water calcium concentrations. [8]
Does that mean Biolytes prevents colorectal cancer? No.
But it certainly changes how we look at calcium.
For most of us, calcium means bones. Researchers are asking much bigger questions.
9. Water Can Help With Weight Management Without Pretending to Burn Fat
Can alkaline water magically burn belly fat? We would rather not tell you fairy tales.
But drinking water can still matter.
Randomised research has found greater weight reduction when people replaced other beverages with water as part of structured weight-management programmes. [9]
The mechanism does not need to be mysterious. A sweet drink contains calories. Water does not.
Replace enough of those drinks over enough days and the maths begins to change.
Sometimes the most useful wellness benefits are not magical. They are repeatable.
Maybe pH Was Never the Whole Story
Hydration. Exercise. Recovery. Reflux. Digestion. Calcium. Bones. Colorectal-health research. Weight management.
Suddenly, alkaline water becomes a much bigger conversation than “What pH is yours?”
And perhaps that is the real awakening.
Two glasses of water can both be alkaline while offering very different things.
So instead of only asking “How alkaline is my water?” ask:
What is making it alkaline, and what am I actually drinking?
That is part of the thinking behind Biolytes.
Biolytes is designed as an everyday Water Enhancer, combining water treatment, alkaline drinking water and ionic calcium mineral enhancement.
Not a high-dose calcium product. Not something you drink only when something goes wrong. Just a better everyday foundation.
Maintenance does not always need to be dramatic. It needs to be consistent.
And if we are already drinking water every single day, we may as well make every glass count.
